Lawn Aeration & Overseeding in Chapel Hill

Lawn aeration is one of the most important maintenance practices we can do to help your lawn remain healthy and ward off problems.  Our Chapel Hill lawn aeration ensures your lawn will be prepared for next seasons troubles as well. Dry compacted soil is the biggest challenge to a beautiful lawn. Grass overseeding of cool season grasses such as Fescue is especially important as it is not self repairing like your warm season grasses. And after this season of dry and hot conditions, every lawn is in need of repair. The best way to handle this is to have Cut Rite Lawn & Landscape LLC of Chapel Hill aerate & overseed your lawn this fall.

What is lawn aeration?

Lawn aeration involves the removal of small plugs or cores from your lawn. This process is done by using an aerators using both pull behind and walk behind models.

How does it work?

After a dry, hot summer and into the fall season you will notice a layer of thatch that builds up just below the grass blade and on soil surface. You should also see the effects of the dry hot summers like dead loss or browned out areas due to heat stress, bare spots and dry compacted soil. At this time the roots of the grass blades will typically be shorter due to effects of summer and this is not ideal for the health of your lawn.

When aeration is completed, plugs are pulled from the soil leaving 2″-4″ holes in the lawn. The holes allow nutrients and water to go deep into the soil and this is the stage where overseeding is applied. The final stage is when the new growth comes in, fills in voids and puts on a healthy root system allowing lawns to recoup and survive another season.

What are the benefits?

Increases the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch. Improves fertilizer intake and use. Enhances water intake and use. Reduces soil compaction. Enhances infiltration of rainfall runoff. Helps prevent fertilizer and pesticide runoff of overly compacted areas. Overall increase in the health and look of your lawn.

Grass Overseeding

Chapel Hill lawn overseeding should be done for all cool season grasses such as Fescue, Kentucky Blue Grass, Ryegrass, etc.

Cool season grasses do not have ability to self repair like warm season grasses such as Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede which means they need to be overseeded annually to fill voids and repair damage from past season. Weeds know only one job and that is to fill voids. If these patches are left untreated weeds will likely take over areas of your lawn eventually covering large section or the entire lawn itself.
